Caring for Your Jalvi & Co. Jewelry

Because your diamond jewelry item is more than just jewelry, it deserves your care and attention as you pass it on for generations. Basic care will ensure that you preserve and protect your beautiful jewelry for years to come.

Gold:

Every 18K / 14k white gold jewelry is plated with rhodium (makes it reflective and resistant) to provide a sparkling white finish. When you wear it daily, or its exposure to usual everyday chemicals, rhodium plating will gradually be worn off over time and expose the natural and yellowish-white tone of white gold metal underneath. Majority of people can wear white gold long after the rhodium plating has worn off and doesn't hinder the jewelry beauty much, but you also have the choice of having your jewelry re-plated so it will to return its bright white color that everyone loves. Please contact Jalvi & Co. for assistance and help with rhodium plating.

We also provide a select number of products with black rhodium plating for Men's jewelry or Goth Jewelry Lovers. Black rhodium also does wear over the years and regular refinishing is absolutely recommended.

Platinum:

Platinum sustains small scratches with daily wear more easily than other metals, and might start taking on a matte appearance. Many people enjoy the visual appeal and exclusivity of platinum's unique luster but you can also have the platinum surface professionally re-polished by us for more reflective finish.

Silver:

Sterling silver does tarnish or looks dull due to exposure to humidity and also air. The silver reacts to air and humidity and in a while it starts looking dull. Whenever possible, keep your silver jewelry in an air-tight containers. Also to remove tarnish and make silver look bright, gently rub the surface with a silver jewelry cleaning cloth as provided for no extra cost with your purchase. Then rinse the silver jewelry with care and nicely in warm water (distilled water works best as it leaves no traces of dirt) and let it dry. More visible tarnish can be removed with liquid silver cleaner or by a jeweler. Please note that chlorine and bleach does accelerate the tarnishing and should be avoided.

Vermeil:

Gold vermeil is referred to sterling silver jewelry plated with thick gold. To care properly for your gold vermeil jewelry pieces, always remember to remove vermeil jewelry before doing dishes, washing clothes, showering or swimming in chlorine or salt water and also participating in activities that will causes you to sweat too much, and also please remember to remove jewelry before bringing into contact with anything hard or working with any hard surfaces. Its always recommended to remove vermeil jewelry before applying lotion, makeup, perfume or even hand sanitizer. Please store each piece of jewelry separate so it won't rub against each other. To clean, gently wipe with the jewelry polishing cloth provided with your order. Please note that we can repair your vermeil jewelry but it will require re-plating and is chargable.

Enamel:

Please remember that Enamel (meena) should never come in contact with temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius or above or exposed to strong chemicals like acids, amines, mercaptans, and bases. Minor scratches on enamel can be re-polished.

Emeralds:

Emeralds (Panna) requires very special care and should be handled gently. We recommend that you remove emerald jewelry while or before using soap or chemical work, such as while taking a shower or washing dishes. Never clean your emerald jewelry in steam cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners or acetone and avoid strong soaps, jewelry cleaner, or other cleaners because it damages the Emerald. It is also recommended to avoid wearing your emerald jewelry next to other rings / jewelry or during activities where you might be bumping the ring against other objects, or putting pressure on your hands as emerald is a relatively easy to damage gemstone. The activities might be weight lifting, rock climbing, cooking, biking, and yoga. To clean emerald jewelry, use room temperature running water and no soap with a soft toothbrush. Brush all the way and on the underside of the emerald to remove dirt and grease. Finish cleaning your emerald by drying your jewelry with a soft cotton cloth and then applying some baby Oil. With proper care your emerald gemstone will keep its beauty for all the years to come. If in doubt please reach us to clean your jewelry.

Other Gemstones:

Examine your jewelry almost weekly to make sure that your gemstones are secure in its setting. Prongs are especially vulnerable, and the do become loose when hit against a surface non-deliberately over the years. Weak or Loose prongs may result in loose gemstones which can cause the loss of a gemstone without you every knowing. Professional inspection by our expert is recommended every five months and/or immediately any time your jewelry is damaged, scratched or hit in any way, this is all just to make sure that all gemstones / diamonds are secure and that the structure of the ring is intact.

Pavé Settings:

Pavé setting is a very delicate and is an artisan Setting. it does look aboslutely amazing but it requires proper care to support longevity and that you never lose a diamond or two. To minimize the risk of losing gemstone, do not wear your pavé jewelry in conditions where friction can wear down the metal which holds the stones in place. Always avoid physical activity which might apply strong pressure or scratch pavé settings. Regularly inspect pavé set jewelry and immediately after your jewelry is hit, scratched, or damaged to identify loose stones. If pavé-set gemstones or diamonds are lost, they can be replaced for a fee with us.

Wearing Jewelry:

Please take good care of your jewelry and protect your jewelry from impact / hitting it against hard surfaces during sports or manual activities—even diamonds can chip if hit with enough force or at just the right angle. Diamonds area hard but they can be chipped if hit at any angle. Avoid contact with rough or abrasive surfaces and always avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine and household bleach or soaps including doing dishes or laundry. Limit your jewelry’s exposure to perfumes, high temperatures, cosmetics/makeups and household chemicals, which can damage jewelry. Never wear rings when holding onto or gripping items with force, such as bike handlebars or weights, as the pressure can cause delicate or minimalist metal rings to bend or even break.
